20 Free Autumn Knitting Patterns-Capes, Ponchos, Shawls, & Wraps
I fall madly in love with Fall’s colors and knitting patterns especially capes, and ponchos, anything you can wear with a pair of boots. Growing up in Ohio I love sweater season walking through the woods while the leaves rustle under my feet. This time of year is perfect for knitting capes, ponchos, shawls, and wraps of any kind. So, I’ve put together a few of each you might also like. There are so many to choose from but here are 20 I found especially nice either because of the colors or designs. I hope I’ve found something for everyone’s style.
5 Free Autumn Knitting Patterns-Wraps
I absolutely had to start with this Maple Leaves Pattern by Katri Parovuori it is just gorgeous in all our favorite Autumn colors and really screams Fall. This may be for the more experienced knitter but when a pattern is this pretty who doesn’t love a challenge like this. This is only the maple leaf chart used to make a simple wrap. You can add any border you want or even include other chart designs to break up the leaves. Be as creative as your heart desires.
Are you a butterfly lover? I was recently standing on my porch and the yard was filled with butterflies all over for nearly an acre. My grandson was amazed but in all my years I’ve never seen so many butterflies in one place naturally. This wrap by Melinda Vermeer is inspired by the Nymphalidae butterfly one of the most prevalent throughout the world. Using self-striping yarn and a solid creates a wing design that truly reminds you of one of nature’s little gems the beautiful butterfly.
I had to include this little City Wrap by Patons it’s so stylish in this off white color but would be great in any shade you choose. Finished with a circular buckle closure but would be great in a square or rectangle also.
Another colorful wrap is this Nestled with Color by Ellen Susanne just the right size to wrap around your arms with all the colors of Autumn. I think the colorful squares remind me of little stain glass windows. You could always switch the stripe down the middle to some other Fall shade if you wanted to brighten it up some.
Last but not least is this wonderful Multi Colored Triangle Wrap by Karin Ruttinger. It’s a fun triangle design with all the colors of Fall changing throughout the design. It reminds me of a leaf as the colors change from greens to yellow, orange, reds, and browns. I really can’t wait to try this one.
5 Free Cape Patterns
We all associate a red cape from the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” and this little cape is perfect for this time of year. If you are looking for a costume for Halloween or just the perfect little cover-up this is the cape for you. Living on the coast beach weddings are an everyday occurrence, even when the temperature starts to dip a bit. So here’s the perfect cape for a Fall or Winter Beach Wedding by DROPS. Not feeling the wedding vibe this would still be perfect with a pair of jeans and a pair of boots in any color you like with an angora or even alpaca yarn.
I thought it would be a good idea to have a simple piece that would look great with anything. This Highlands Cape by Elaine Phillips is a classic that would look great in any color and goes with everything. Dress it up or down, add buttons or even a zipper if you dare.
If you favor a more modern design this Fair Isle Capelet by Lion Brand Yarn might be perfect. With a bold color combination and geometric design this cape screams style. I think this is a very urban look anyone who is city bound will love. I also think this cape would be great in just black and white.
I am such a fan of vintage clothes and knitting patterns. You really have to be careful though not to look dated with vintage styles. This Coat Cape by James Lees Sons gives style, vintage, and modern the perfect combination of looks. I feel like this pattern came right off the streets of uptown New York with the swing coat design it’s perfect any outfit.
5 Free Autumn Knitting Patterns – Ponchos
Need some fringe? How about this Irish Knit Poncho by Adele Huey McCall? The color screams fall but I think I’d love it in a dark green being Irish by design. Maybe even a little longer fringe for fun. This poncho has such great texture with a very traditional poncho style.
This is so my style with a southwestern and a fair isle feel this poncho is just gorgeous. Plus this Southwest by DROPS design has a matching hat, bag for a truly cold day you will look so put together. I think the fringe is the perfect length on this one as well I could definitely see my oldest daughter sporting this look.
This Poncho by Bergere de France has a very natural earthy feel. Originally a French pattern, just click on the link for the USA if you prefer English and it downloads as a pdf immediately. I think this would be so great for really cold weather in a warm wool yarn.
Another beautiful poncho by DROPS design is this Sweet Winter Poncho. A wonderful Fair Isle design with a hoodie to keep the cold icy drizzle off your head is perfect this time of year. Just pick your favorite colors and start knitting.
One more Little Peach Poncho by DROPS design for your baby girl with some matching booties is so sweet. The perfect blanket to wear everywhere you go. Pick your favorite color or colors and your off. The best part this one knits up really fast.

This is another shawl with typical Fall colors. Warmth exudes from every inch a definite must for this time of year is the Merino Stripes Mitered Squares Triangle Shawl by Gail Tanquary. Wool, stripes, mitered corners all in one beautiful shawl.
If you’re looking for a shawl with a simple rectangle design and some pockets to put your goodies or to keep your hands warm here’s a beautiful Cabled Pocket Shawl by Joanne Zoller Wagner in a lovely Autumn red.
I love this mitered corner look with sunny colors. Rightly named Domino Sunset by Malin Nilsson is this sunny delight shawl in yellows and oranges.
The finale to this article is the lead photo Revontuli Huivi Northern Lights by Anne M. the entire shawl looks like a maple leaf with any color you choose greens, oranges, reds, and yellows you have Fall lovingly wrapped around your shoulders.
